In 2019, two issues of concern to the Jewish community are consistently at the top of the headlines: anti-Semitism and Israel. These words invoke more polarization than ever both inside and outside of the Jewish community. J Street Portland and Temple Beth Israel Brotherhood invite you to a lively conversation about what's behind these headlines and how they shape and are shaped by the 2020 US national election.

Speakers:
Shaina Wasserman is the Director of Rabbinic and Community Engagement at J Street. A lively and engaging speaker, she joined J Street in 2013 as the New England Regional Director. Before working for J Street, Shaina was the Project Manager for Congregational Learning at The Jewish Education Project in New York. Previously, Shaina served as the Education Director and Community Organizer at Congregation Beth Am in Northern California and at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. She has nearly 20 years of experience in Jewish communal work. She holds a Joint Masters Degree in Jewish Non-Profit Management and Jewish Education from HUC-JIR in Los Angeles. She received her B.A. in History and in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University.
Steven M. Wasserstrom is The Moe and Izetta Tonkon Professor of Judaic Studies and the Humanities at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he has taught since 1987. A thoughtful and intellectually stimulating presenter, Professor Wasserstrom has lectured at universities throughout the United States, including Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Princeton University, Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley, as well as at the major universities of Israel and Canada. He served as the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Distinguished Visiting Professor in Judaic Studies at the College of William and Mary, as an Invited Scholar at the Zentrum für Literatur und Kulturforschung in Berlin and as a member of the Working Group on Messianism, The Tikvah Project on Jewish Thought, Princeton University. He recently spoke at OJMCHE on "Fake News in 1930s Germany and Today" and has written numerous works including: Between Muslim and Jew: The Problem of Symbiosis under Early Islam; Religion after Religion: Gershom Scholem, Mircea Eliade, and Henry Corbin at Eranos; and “The Fullness of Time”: Poems by Gershom Scholem.
