Tell Congress to Take a Stand Against the Demolition of Palestinian Homes and Communities

Tell your Representative:

The Israeli government continues to undermine Palestinian human rights and the prospects for peace by engaging in demolitions of Palestinian homes and the associated forcible transfer of Palestinians in the West Bank. Reps. Ro Khanna, Anna Eshoo and Steve Cohen are leading a sign-on letter requesting that the US government undertake an examination of whether American-supplied military equipment is being used in such demolitions. The letter also questions whether such use would comply with existing law limiting foreign countries' use of US-sourced military equipment to legitimate self-defense purposes.

It is in the interest of the United States, Israel and the Palestinians that the US take concrete steps to preserve prospects for a two-state solution. This is an opportunity to do so.

I urge you to exercise your vital congressional oversight prerogative and add your name to this letter.

Background

Reps. Ro Khanna, Anna Eshoo and Steve Cohen are circulating a new letter raising concerns about the dramatic rise in home demolitions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the accompanying displacement of Palestinians.

In the early half of 2019, observers recorded a 40% increase in the demolition of Palestinian homes over the same period in 2018.

The letter asks the executive branch to report to Congress if US-provided equipment has been used to carry out these demolitions and whether such use would violate any existing aid-use restrictions.

J Street believes this is an important call for transparency which -- in opposing demolitions that entrench the occupation and make peace harder to achieve -- serves the interest of the US, Israel and the Palestinian people.
