Far-right Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich has celebrated the approval of thousands of new settlement housing units in E1, admitting the project "buries the idea of a Palestinian state."

Settlement construction in E1 would cut the northern West Bank off from the southern West Bank, sever East Jerusalem from Palestinian population centers, and further restrict Palestinians' freedom of movement – causing devastating long-term consequences for the Palestinian people and regional peace.

For roughly three decades, Democratic and Republican administrations alike treated E1 construction as a red line. The Trump administration has abandoned that line.

Senators Elizabeth Warren, Chris Coons, Ron Wyden and Ruben Gallego have introduced legislation to sanction foreign individuals and entities that finance, plan, build or otherwise advance settlement construction in E1. Ten of their colleagues have already signed on, and we urgently need more senators to join them.
