We write as American Jews – supporters of a secure, Jewish and democratic State of Israel – who are deeply concerned by allegations of sexual abuse and rape of Palestinian detainees held in Israeli custody.

Rather than meeting these allegations with the seriousness they demand, members of your government have attacked the journalists and investigators bringing them forward – while hailing soldiers caught on camera abusing a Palestinian detainee as “heroic fighters.”

Some details and accusations remain disputed. The right response to disputed allegations is full investigation, not blanket denial.

That is why we call on you to open credible, independent investigations into the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody – including the specific cases documented in Nicholas Kristof's reporting – and to hold accountable any individuals found responsible.

Our Jewish values command us to respect the dignity of every human being.

That includes Palestinians.
