The assassination of Iran’s top military commander represented the most significant in a series of escalatory steps by the Trump administration since its violation of the Iran nuclear deal.
There is no debate that Soleimani was a malicious actor responsible for the deaths of thousands of people -- including Americans. But as with Trump’s Iran policy as a whole, this action was taken without consideration of consequences or overall strategy, absent congressional authorization and without the support of allies.
Now that the House has passed war powers legislation to restrain the president, the Senate needs to do the same.
