The assassination of Iran’s top military commander represents the latest and most significant in a series of escalatory steps by the Trump administration since its violation of the Iran nuclear deal.
There is no debate that Soleimani was a malicious actor responsible for the deaths of thousands of people -- including Americans. But as with Trump’s Iran policy as a whole, this action was taken without consideration of consequences or overall strategy, absent congressional authorization and without the support of allies.
Congress needs to reassert its constitutional authority over matters of war and peace and act immediately to prevent a devastating war with Iran.
Tell your representative and senators to support war powers resolutions that will be voted on in coming days.
