Say NO to Israel's anti-democratic 'Transparency Law'

Israel's Cabinet recently approved a deeply distressing anti-NGO law that the Washington Post has called 'a danger to Israeli democracy.'

Misleadingly called the 'Transparency Law,' it applies a number of restrictions to left-leaning NGOs that receive money from foreign governments -- and does nothing to increase the tranparency of rightwing organizations funded by anonymous foreign donors.

Many of the organizations targeted by this bill are the true champions of transparency -- they cast light on the policies and actions of the Israeli government that jeopardize peace and erode democracy.

American Jews celebrate Israeli democracy, a hallmark of the shared values central to the strong US-Israel relationship. So, even those of us most hesitant to criticize the workings of that democracy must stand up and speak out loudly against this law, which threatens to chip away at the bedrock of our bond.

    Tell Ambassador Ron Dermer:

Transparency is important. But it is clear that the proposed 'Transparency' law under consideration in the Knesset is not about transparency. Instead, it targets groups that have been critical of government policy -- groups that, under current Israeli law -- are already required to publish their funding sources.

That's why mainstream voices in the United States are calling the proposed law a danger to Israeli democracy.

As a supporter of Israel in the United States, I must register my strong opposition to a law that erodes Israel's democratic character and the values on which the state was founded.
