Stop Congress from dangerously upending US policy on Israeli settlements

A new House resolution threatens to put Congress on record defending Israeli settlements.

The resolution erases the distinction between Israel and the occupied territory by treating Israel and Israeli-controlled territory as one and the same.

It's a dangerous precedent which undermines the peace process and expressly violates existing US policy.

A new resolution on Israeli settlement products authored by Reps. Lowey, Roskam, Engel and Royce upends US policy on Israeli settlements by treating Israel and Israeli-controlled territory as one and the same.

The resolution claims to support the laudable goals of combatting BDS against Israel and supporting the two-state solution.

Instead, the very problematic language in the resolution provides ammunition to the BDS movement by blurring the line between the Israel recognized by the international community and the settlement enterprise which the US and our allies oppose.

And because that line is not an abstract concept -- but rather the Green Line that will serve as the basis for negotiations toward a two-state solution -- to blur it is to undermine the two-state solution itself.

Anyone who aims to support Israel should understand that this resolution subverts that goal.
