In politicizing the critical relationship between Israel and the US, Prime Minister Netanyahu has done tremendous damage. Now, he's coming to Washington to begin repairing the breach.

On Monday, he's sitting down with President Obama. We have some thoughts on what the President should say to help get the relationship back on track.

I want to stand up and be counted as a J Street Member

Dear Mr. President:

I support Israel and I know you do, too. So as you sit down with Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday, I would like to respectfully suggest some important issues that are affecting the US-Israel relationship and should be raised in your discussion.

1.    In a time of insecurity, the people of Israel should know that their friends in America condemn terror and mourn for the victims of the violence.
2.    Ultimately, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians cannot simply be managed, it must be resolved, and Israel’s future as the democratic homeland of the Jewish people secured, through a two-state solution.
3.    Racism and incitement from both Palestinian and Israeli officials is unacceptable and must stop.
4.    Israel’s commitment to democracy must be maintained and affirmed, and the Prime Minister should work to block legislative proposals that restrict free speech and political expression.
5.    Even as a comprehensive resolution appears momentarily out of reach, Israel can and should take every step it can to make an eventual resolution of the conflict more likely.

Mr. President, we trust you to speak honestly and frankly in your meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu because we know that Israel's wellbeing is close to your heart and that you understand it's the underlying values and shared history that tie our two nations together. That's why it's so important to speak up now.
