Ambassador Samuel Kaplan and his wife Sylvia are well-known business and community leaders in Minneapolis. Ambassador Kaplan served as United States Ambassador to Morocco from 2009 - 2013. Appointed by President Barack Obama, he is one of only a few American Jews to represent the United States in a Muslim nation. The Kaplan’s have a long history of support for the Democratic Party. Kaplan served as chairman of Senator Paul Wellstone’s successful 1990 and 1996 election and reelection campaigns. He also served as one of the chairs of John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign in Minnesota. He was a member of the National Finance Committee of Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign. Ambassador and Mrs. Kaplan have six children and thirteen grandchildren.
