President-elect Trump's appointment of Stephen Bannon to serve as chief strategist and senior counselor in the White House should concern Republicans and Democrats alike.
His appointment sends the message that the racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic views of the alt-right will be embraced by this administration. It gives women, Muslims, Jews, immigrants and LGBT people more reason to fear what the next four years will hold for them.
As one of your constituents, I'm imploring you to speak out and call on President-elect Trump to rescind this appointment and meaningfully demonstrate that he's working to bridge divides and address the legitimate concerns of groups that have been targeted by the alt-right.
Our elected officials need to speak up now. If we cannot stop the appointment of Bannon, we must make it clear that his views represent the fringe of American political discourse and will not be normalized.
