Dear Paul,

Peter Beinart in Chicago

Last night, more than 200 people packed Beth Emet to hear Peter Beinart speak about American Jews and future of Israel.

In many ways it was a difficult discussion. One participant last night asked Mr. Beinart, in the aftermath of Netanyahu's far-right coalition announcement, how can anyone have any hope for a two-state solution?

"There is a difference between optimism and hope [...] Jewish tradition tells us to fight for justice not because of what it does for others, but also because of what it does for ourselves. It's who we are."

We agree with Peter Beinart: Embracing a one-state alternative to the two-state solution is like drifting far out to sea and deciding that instead of swimming to shore, you should fly.

We are more committed than ever to standing in solidarity with our Israeli partners and allies working to better their country, by ensuring that our voice is represented in Congress and in the Jewish Community. Here's how you can stay involved:

  1. Check out our actions and resources for talking about Israel and remembering the Green Line in your synagogue, Hebrew School, and home.
  2. Thank Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky for supporting US diplomacy to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
  3. Reach out to us directly at timna@jstreet.org to get more involved.

Thank you,

Mark Zivin
